Since the June launch of the Farming for a Better Climate initiative SAC staff have already established active groups and begun programmes around two of the volunteer Focus Farms. The details are included in the first of what will be a series of SAC Newsletters. It explains how the Scottish Government funded programme encourages local groups of land managers to explore practical ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farms while improving business performance.
Reports on activity surrounding Torr Farm in Galloway and Glenkilrie near Blairgowrie outline what has happened so far and draw attention to the extra information available on the SAC Website www.sac.ac.uk/farmingforabetterclimate. At meetings on both units SAC staff have worked with the focus farmers, NFU Scotland and Scottish Government to help the groups established on each farm begin to address ideas that suit local conditions.
There are plans for a more public orientated centre on Stewart Tower at Stanley near Perth where the efforts the industry is making to address climate change can be properly explained to consumers. Unfortunately Jim Reid at Milton of Mathers, the fourth focus farmer, has reluctantly had to step back from the programme for business reasons and a new arable Focus Farm will be announced in the spring. However Jim’s farm will be visited as part of the initiative.
The next Newsletter will be published in the spring and will contain a profile of Stewart Tower and the new arable focus farm. Meanwhile the first edition is to be circulated to those on the e mail distribution list. Those not yet on that list can find a copy on the SAC website on the Farming for a Better Climate home page. They can send an application to climatechange@sac.co.uk or contact Project Co-ordinator Rebecca Audsley Rebecca.audsley@sac.co.uk tel. 01292 525089.
