New Farming for a Better Climate Arable Farm Chosen
Robert and Jac Neill of Upper Nisbet by Jedburgh have joined the group of Focus Farmers involved in the Scottish Government’s “Farming for a Better Climate” initiative. They have volunteered to take up the challenge after business pressures caused the original choice, Angus farmer Jim Reid of Milton of Mathers, to withdraw for the moment.
The Neill family took over the tenancy of Upper Nisbet in 2000 and are already well known for their award winning beef enterprise. However of the 445 ha, 242 ha is down to cereals and it is that arable operation which the Focus Group, made up of local farmers and neighbours, will turn it’s attention to as they explore ways of reducing the size of the farm’s carbon footprint.
An open day is planned for the farm in May on a date still to be decided. SAC facilitator for the Borders group will be Moira Gallagher from the St Boswells office.
