Iain Riddell (opens in new window)
SAC Consultant and Regional Manager Iain Riddell has been writing history in his spare time and his work has just been published.
Together with former SAC crop and soil specialist Dr. Kerr Walker, he contributed a chapter to “Farming and the Land”, one of fourteen volumes on Scottish life and society produced by the University of Edinburgh’s European Ethnological Research Centre.
In nearly 1200 fascinating pages the new book, edited by Alexander Fenton and Kenneth Veitch, examines the development of farming and crofting over the generations and reflects on the place they have held and hold within Scottish culture. Ian and Kerr’s contribution was on “Crops and Livestock in the Modern Era”. It covers the period 1875 to 2007, from the dramatic falls in grain prices following the American Civil War to GM.
Amongst other contributors well know to those in SAC are Professor Ian Cunningham, former Principal of the West of Scotland College and Professor Jeff Maxwell, former Director of MLURI. Scottish Life and Society, Farming and the Land, a compendium of Scottish Ethnology is published by John Donald in association with the European Ethnological Research Centre.
