SAC Environmental Focus Farm Newsletter – the latest edition
The latest edition of SAC’s Environmental Focus Farm Newsletter highlights the latest developments around the Focus farms in Angus and Ayrshire. With soil erosion and diffuse pollution being of particular concern in those areas the re has been continued emphasis on those areas.
The project, funded by Scottish Government as part of its “Success Through Knowledge” programme, continues to capitalise in the commitment and interest of the groups of committed neighbours established around the farms. They act as sounding boards and constructive critics, Offering advice and their own ideas to the projects. Focus farmers Willie Campbell (Low Holehouse, Ayrshire) and Tom Sampson (Mains of Balgavies, Angus) continue to be willing guinea pigs,
In this latest edition of the Newsletter there are reports on work carried out at Low Holehouse with slurry storage and management, with the old slurry lagoon now the site of a new cubicle house. In Angus where the loss of soil into local water courses has been a key areas of study there have been visits to high risk sites and consideration given to new avoidance strategies.
It is important to emphasise that the work around both farms also addresses biodiversity issues. Ed and Helen Law of Restenneth in Angus have highlighted how farms can use existing schemes to make a real difference. Finally with water quality still a key driving factor behind the work there are the latest results of bathing water quality and advice on how to avoid falling foul of the regulations.
