SAC Recruitment Supports Eco-Schools Action on Barra
Jill Thomson visits Castlebay School, Barra (opens in new window)
SAC Student Recruitment Officer Jill Thomson from Ayr was recently invited to the Island of Barra to give one of the talks her team deliver on Environmental or Science topics.
Students at Castlebay School are passionate about maintaining the pristine beauty of their location and are working towards gaining Green Flag status for the school through the Eco-Schools scheme. Jill responded to their request to address a school Assembly and various year groups. She found it an exciting challenge and a memorable highlight in SAC’s ‘Guest Speaker to Schools Programme’.
As well as the eco-school agenda, Castlebay School had another reason to invite SAC. One of their 6th year students Jamie McIntosh is to study Countryside and Environmental Management at the new SAC Ayr Campus. Moving away from his Island home will be a huge step for Jamie, but SAC offer lots of support to students coming from rural areas and understand the adjustments they need to make to succeed.
Since the trip Morag MacNeil, the teacher who facilitated the visit has written.
‘Thank you for coming all the way to Barra to visit us! We really appreciate your time and effort, and I am so glad that you had a good trip. The weather was fantastic - couldn't have been better! I was really pleased with your talks, and your advice to students couldn't have come at a better time, on the last day of school before Study Leave. Hopefully, you will be able to come back again in the future. I'll encourage our students to look at the material you left.’
From Jill’s perspective as a Student Recruitment Officer it was satisfying to meet potential students in their own settings and to demonstrate the ongoing commitment SAC has to supporting rural schools. Jill says “Thank you Castlebay School for being great hosts.”
