SAC Welcomes Two Delegations from China
Hubei Visitors (opens in new window)
Sichuan Visitors (opens in new window)
Professor Geoff Simm recently welcomed two delegations from China to the Edinburgh campus. The first delegation originated from Sichuan province (where the Pandas come from). Most of the 13 delegates were veterinarians from different Sichuan offices and districts.
As they were interested in the relationship between SAC’s disease surveillance centers and private veterinary practices the delegation heard presentations from Geoff Simm, Jonathan Cowen and Brian Hosie giving an overview of the activities of SAC Consulting and Veterinary Services. The Scottish Government-funded programme of veterinary disease surveillance was discussed with particular emphasis on the detection of new and emerging diseases.
Also of interest were SAC’s commercial activities including the commercial reasons for farmers opting to accredit their stock in the Premium Cattle Health Scheme (PCHS) and Premium Sheep & Goat Health Scheme (PSGHS). It stimulated a lively discussion.
The second delegation was from another central province, Hubei. The six delegates were directors of several provincial organizations including the Agriculture Department and the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau.
This time Geoff Simm was accompanied by Nick Sparks and Sandy Ramsay who led more presentations and discussion. Sandy Ramsay’s work triggered many questions around the advice to farmers, policy and government structure. They were impressed by the various technologies available to farmers for advice, and they commented positively on the communication SAC has with the Scottish government regarding policy. They said they believed they could learn from SAC as their agriculture is still at a developing stage.
Both groups invited SAC to visit their provinces.
