Successful Schools Day at Auchincruive

SAC’s Auchincruive site continues to be a popular venue for schools taking part in events organised in conjunction with the Royal Highland Education Trust. The gatherings vary in scale and activity but are getting a very positive response.

Recently pupils from Loudoun Academy spent a morning visiting the gardens of the Horticulture Department before a tour of the farm after lunch. Later a group from Stewarton had a session at the farm before gong indoors to learn about Farming Practices in Scotland and Vehicles & Traction. Unfortunately the Orienteering was a casualty of the weather!

However the main event of the autumn was the ‘Food & Farming Day’ organised by RHET Ayrshire and Arran, SAC and members of the local agricultural community. It involved six East Ayrshire schools who were learning where their food is produced. The initiative, which relies on volunteers as well as SAC staff, supports the Curriculum for Excellence.

Sponsored by the Scottish Government (Food and Drink Industry Division), the aim is to provide a ‘hands-on’ educational experience. There were sessions on milk processing (including butter making), cereals and grains, poultry and eggs, honey, butchery (in particular – sausages) and machinery.
