High Hopes for Herd Books At Perth Bull Sales

SAC News Release Ref. No: 12N24
Published: 06 Feb 2012

A piece of cattle breeding history will go under the hammer at Perth Bull Sales today (6 February) in the form of 50 volumes of Coates’s Herd Books, detailing the pedigrees of British Shorthorns from 1876 to 1925.

The books were removed from Oswald Hall, a mansion house on SAC’s Auchincruive Estate in Ayrshire, before it was put on the market at the end of last year. All proceeds from the sale of the books will be donated to RSABI and the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET). It is hoped that the growing popularity of the Beef Shorthorn breed will boost interest in the collection.

Since leaving Oswald Hall, the herd books have been in the care of SAC’s Ayrshire-based Agricultural Consultant Robert Ramsay, who has a special interest in the breed. Three bulls from his Uncle Jack’s Milerston Beef Shorthorn herd are also entered in this week’s sales.

Robert said: “The Beef Shorthorn breed is making a real comeback as farmers look to reduce costs and are targeting easier care systems. We’re hoping the fact more and more people are taking an interest in the breed will be reflected in a good number of bids for the herd books. The greater the interest, the bigger the donations to RSABI and RHET.”

David Leggat, United Auctions’ Executive Chairman estimates the collection may sell for £500 or more. He said: “This is the first time in quite a while that we have had such a collection for sale and the books are in good condition. Given the rising popularity of the Beef Shorthorn breed, hopefully their sale will attract a fair level of interest and raise plenty of money for the chosen charities.”
