SAC Strengthens Links with Brazil – MoU Signed with Major Brazilian Research Body

SAC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EMBRAPA – The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation. With over 8000 employees and a network of 38 Research Centres, EMBRAPA co ordinates the nation’s Agricultural Research System which includes most of Brazil’s public and private bodies involved in agricultural research.

However, EMBRAPA also has an international focus and regards links with SAC as significant. SAC Chief Executive and Principal Professor Bill McKelvey described the move as exciting. In a letter to Dr. Pedro Antonio Arraes Pereira, Director- President of EMBRAPA, he said:

“We believe the initiative will bring significant benefits, not only to our organisations, but to our respective countries.”

Some of SAC’s existing links with Brazil include a soil research project involving Dr. Bruce Ball and a multi national animal welfare research project, led by Professor Adroaldo Zanella who is Brazilian and joined SAC in 2011.

Professor Zanella was influential in establishing the links leading to a Memorandum of Understanding.

Prof Geoff Simm, SAC Academic Director and Vice-Principal Research said:

“Brazil is emerging as one of the world leaders in agriculture and animal production. The SAC and EMBRAPA partnership will stimulate joint working on addressing some of the huge global challenge that agricultural research, education and consulting must address.”

The first project under the new MoU will take place in April this year, when SAC will lead a delegation of Scottish Researchers who will travel to the southern Brazilian city of Pelotas for a 3 days workshop. It will seek to develop a strategic plan and partnerships to foster collaboration in research and teaching.
