SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N89
Published: 15 Jul 2011
SAC’s new “GreenCow” research facility outside Edinburgh is the venue for an event highlighting some of the latest technology and ideas linked to the science of livestock production. The Showcase, on Thursday August 4th, will include a wide range of innovative technologies being used in research or under development for use by farmers and the livestock sector. You are invited to attend.
Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead MSP opened SAC’s GreenCow facility at the Beef Research Centre, Bush in March. This is now up and running and those attending the event will be able to see and discuss it in more detail. Also on show will be a wide range of other equipment which, together with know-how, researchers are using to help tackle the major challenges of food production and climate change.
The Showcase is being jointly organised by SAC, and the Bio Biosciences Knowledge Transfer Network.A number of commercial companies will also be exhibiting and demonstrating their latest products.
In addition to the automated feed intake bins and respiration chambers of the SAC GreenCow suite, where a large trial with 72 cattle with 2 genotypes and 2 diets is presently underway, there will be a chance to catch up on the livestock grazing work. This is specifically focussed on measuring methane output from both lowland and hill pasture grazing.
Among the commercial exhibitors is Scottish life sciences company Ingenza, currently working with Professor John Wallace of the Rowett Institute, on the use of rumen enzymes to produce biofuels. Glasgow based Embedded Technology Solutions (ETS) will present their ‘Silent Herdsman’ technology, claimed to increase pregnancy success rates from 10% to more than 30%.
The event is free to attend but registration will be required. To register, please email Gillian Cheevers at Gillian.cheevers@sac.ac.uk include your name, organisation and address. On the day tea/coffee will be available from 10.00am for a 10.30 start. Finish time 15.30. Lunch is included, please notify the organisers of any special dietary or access requirements.
