Professor Seamus McDaid, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of Scotland, is the latest recipient of an SAC Honorary Fellowship. He was presented his award during the SAC graduation ceremony held in Bute Hall, University of Glasgow on Friday July 8th.
The SAC Honorary Fellowship is awarded annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the work and the development of SAC. In recent years former NFUS President John Ross CBE, Stuart Housden OBE, Chief Executive off RSPB Scotland and Alex Ferguson MSP, former Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament, have all been recipients.
Addressing the gathering of SAC staff, graduates and friends attending the graduation ceremony Professor McDaid said:
“I am delighted to be receiving this Honorary Fellowship from SAC. It is a huge honour to receive this award from such an important Scottish higher education institution.”
University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has a roll of some 20,000 degree, postgraduate and research students; a wide range of career-focused full-time and part-time awards; and four campuses across the West of Scotland in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley.
In presenting the Honorary Fellowship SAC Chairman Lord Jamie Lindsay said:
“There are two key things that are really notable about UWS: its devotion to Vocational education and its partnership approach to working with other educational organisations. And that partnership approach, which has been led from the front by Seamus McDaid, has ensured a successful completion of the joint campus development in Ayr with SAC. Whilst UWS are the bigger shareholder we have always been treated as equal partners in this project”.
In response Professor McDaid commented:
“The University enjoys extremely close links with SAC. I believe that our joint development is an outstanding example of the benefits that can be gained by Higher Education Institutions working collaboratively.”
A Chartered Accountant, Professor McDaid joined what is now Glasgow Caledonian University in 1976, holding a number of senior academic posts including Dean of the Faculty of Business. He developed a strong international reputation in his specialist area and led a number of major projects in Africa, funded by the UK Government’s Overseas Development Administration, and the World Bank. In 1997 Professor McDaid was appointed Vice Principal of the then University of Paisley, becoming Principal and Vice-Chancellor in 2005. Since then he has been instrumental in the creation of UWS.
