SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N81
Published: 09 Jul 2011
For her outstanding contribution to veterinary pathology and pig medicine, SAC Veterinary Manager Dr Jill Thomson was awarded a Personal Professorship in Veterinary Disease Investigation during SAC’s annual Graduation Ceremony. At the event, held in Bute Hall, University of Glasgow on Friday 8th June, Jill was described as “by far the foremost star in UK pig veterinary medicine”.
Professor Thomson joined SAC in 1982, after gaining a PhD at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. Her focus has been on farm animal disease surveillance and veterinary laboratory diagnosis. From her Edinburgh base she developed specialisms in veterinary pathology and pig medicine, obtaining internationally-recognised qualifications. Jill is an active member of the Pig Veterinary Society and was its President in 2007.
Under Jill Thomson’s direction, SAC Veterinary Services has developed a portfolio of eight novel pig diagnostic tests that are invaluable tools for disease diagnosis and health monitoring in breeding herds. These tests are now offered routinely to veterinary practices and they are the mainstay of health assurance schemes for several major pig breeding companies.
According to the award citation “Jill’s research over 20 years has improved our understanding of the implications of intestinal diseases on pig health, welfare and economic performance”.
In addition to her research record, with over 60 publications, Professor Thomson has a longstanding involvement in veterinary education. She is an external lecturer in pig medicine at the Dick Vet, contributes to the Pig Medicine course at the Royal Veterinary College in London and frequently supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is highly valued as a collaborator by SAC colleagues and beyond.
