Dr. Malcolm Mitchell, the SAC scientist with a world wide reputation for his research on live animal transport, was conferred with the title of “Professor” during SAC’s Graduation ceremony in Bute Hall, University of Glasgow. His Personal Professorship in “Physiology and Animal Welfare” recognises an outstanding contribution to both the science and practice of animal welfare.
One of the international referees for his award described Malcolm Mitchell as:
“the world leader in the science of animal transportation. He combines exceptionally strong skills as an experimental scientist with mathematical modelling expertise which furthers our understanding of complex problems.”
After an early post-doctoral career in medical research Malcolm Mitchell joined the Roslin Institute in 1981, where he remained until becoming a member of SAC staff in 2005. Throughout his career he has established strong links with policy makers and industry, working extensively with hauliers and abattoirs. He is greatly respected by these and other industry players.
According to his citation:
Professor Mitchell’s influence is felt in the UK, the European Union and beyond. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that animal transport and slaughter policy really is evidence based, and that the evidence is of the highest scientific quality. He has been a frequent member or contributor to Defra and European Food Safety Authority working groups – working most recently on revisions to the EU transport directive.
Tribute was paid to the encouragement Malcolm gives to the next generation of scientists. To date he has supervised 13 PhD students, 20 MSc students and over 35 honours students. He has received many awards, the latest being the RSPCA/British Society of Animal Science Award for contributions to animal welfare, presented to Malcolm Mitchell and his long term collaborator Pete Kettlewell.
Malcolm’s work has spanned poultry, pigs, cattle and sheep.
