Getting the Best From Your Grassland

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N32
Published: 11 Mar 2011

With fodder and concentrate prices going through the roof this winter, improving in-bye grasslands, common grazings and home grown forage has become increasingly important. An SAC event on Stornoway on 16 March is aimed at helping local crofters get the best out of their grasslands.

The meeting will focus on the use of clover as a nitrogen fixing agent, grassland improvement techniques and the importance of nutrient and soil analysis. There will be a presentation by Richard Huxtable, an SAC consultant from Thainstone who specialises in grassland management and organic farming.  SAC’s local advisor, Iain Macmillan, will be speaking about diffuse pollution.

The event is funded by the Scottish Government as part of its Organic Farming and Pollution Prevention Advisory Activities.

The free meeting is open to everyone and tea and coffee will be provided. Please phone Stornoway SAC office (01851 703103) for information and directions.
