As SAC prepares to base its local teaching activities at the custom-built Riverside Campus in Ayr, the next course Taster Day for prospective students will have a ‘green’ theme to reflect the new development’s impressive environmental credentials.
In addition to the well-known SAC courses such as Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Science, subjects to be showcased at the Taster Day on 9th March include Sustainable Building Technology, Green Technology and Sustainable Environmental Management. These are concerned with the balance between meeting modern society’s needs and responding to environmental concerns such as carbon emissions and pollution.
This is an issue at the heart of the development of the £70M, 18,000 sq m Riverside Campus building, where the aim is to provide a state-of-the-art learning centre for students of SAC and University of the West of Scotland while minimising the development’s environmental impact. On track to become one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly Higher Education sector premises, the building has already achieved the award of a ‘BREEAM Excellent’ rating from the Building Research Establishment which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design.
SAC Student Recruitment Officer Jill Thomson explained: “The new Riverside Campus, where SAC’s teaching activities will be based from September 2011, provides an excellent real-life example of the sort of issues explored by students of a number of our courses - how modern development can be carried out sustainably, meeting the needs of our society but without causing damage to the environment.
“We offer a diverse range of exciting courses which have a connection to sustainability and the environment, from the familiar land-based subjects such as Agriculture, Horticulture and Animal Science to subjects that people may be surprised to find SAC offers, like Garden Design, Nature Tourism and Sports Coaching.”
For anyone with an interest in the environment around them who is considering their study or career options, coming along to the Taster Day could provide the inspiration to take a course or career path they may not have thought of before. They will also be able to hear from staff and students about how enjoyable and rewarding student life at SAC can be.
The event is free but anyone who would like to attend is asked to book in advance as places are limited. Those interested should contact Jill Thomson, Student Recruitment Officer, on 01292 525343 or by emailing ayr@sac.ac.uk.
