Applications on the up (opens in new window)
The continued rise in applications to SAC for places on next (academic) year’s Agriculture courses at Ayr, Aberdeen and Edinburgh has been welcomed by SAC management. SAC’s brand new campus beside the river in Ayr has 80% more applicants for Agriculture this year with Aberdeen up 74% and Edinburgh 29%. However concerns remain about future funding of education and the likely impact on the number of applicants SAC might be able to accept across all its campuses in later years.
By the January deadline for applications via UCAS (Universities and Colleges Applications Service) the total number of those applying for the courses offered by SAC was up by 21% on the year before. This included a 43% rise in the numbers interested in studying agricultural subjects, with interest in environment courses 39% up and leisure course applications higher by 36%.
The continued rising trend in applications has pleased SAC Chief Executive and Principal Professor Bill McKelvey.
“In recent years there has been a marked increase in the numbers of young people who see a future in farming and rural management. SAC’s brand new campus beside the river in Ayr has proved very popular with applicants from the west of Scotland. The major investment that SAC has made in Ayr will provide 21st century facilities, some of the best in the UK. This vote of confidence in what SAC offers must encourage all those involved with rural business, food production and land management in Scotland and beyond”.
Professor McKelvey has congratulated all the SAC staff involved in student recruitment. There will be more information events for potential students in the coming months. Check out our page on Open Days.
