The Alpine Plant Challenge - 23rd SAC/Royal Horticultural Society Annual Public Lecture
SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N150
Published: 20 Dec 2011
Jim Jermyn, an expert in rare and unusual plants, will offer advice on successfully growing alpine species on lower ground when he delivers the 23rd SAC/Royal Horticultural Society annual public lecture in Ayr on 17 January.
Recreating the conditions in which Alpine plants grow naturally presents a real challenge for “lowland gardeners”. For many, the answer is to grow these plants in a cold greenhouse, known as an alpine house. Jim will outline ways of growing these plants so they can be enjoyed in an open garden, including the use of raised beds, crevice gardens, troughs and traditional rock gardens.
After obtaining his horticultural qualifications, Jim held a variety of posts in Germany, Italy, and the U.K. and was for twenty years the proprietor of Scotland’s Edrom Nurseries, which is known for sourcing unusual plants.
He has led many botanical tours to the Dolomites and is now a horticultural consultant and Show Manager for Gardening Scotland and the Ayr Flower Show. He currently serves as a committee member on the RHS Joint Rock committee, is chairman of the Garden for Life Forum and vice-chairman of the Meconopsis Group.
The lecture takes place at 7.30pm on Tuesday 17th January 2011 at the SAC/UWS Riverside Campus in Ayr. To book tickets contact Peter MacDonald via the details below. RHS members £5, non-members £8.
