Focus on Suckler Cow and Calf Health at SAC Beef Event, Thornhill
SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N143
Published: 25 Nov 2011
While the recent increase in the value of cattle has improved beef producers’ prospects, the ongoing rise in input costs makes efficient production all the more important if worthwhile returns are to be achieved.
A healthy herd is a key element of efficiency and with this in mind, SAC Consulting, Dumfries is holding a free suckler cow and calf management event at Marr Farm, Thornhill, on 1 December 2011, courtesy of Andrew Hamilton & Co.
Dumfries-based SAC Consultants David Keiley and David Owen will kick off the day by covering silage analysis and feeding requirements, along with practical guidance on rationing.
Whether the plan is to rear them or sell them on, getting calves off to a good start in life is critical. SAC Beef and Sheep Consultant Rhidian Jones will offer advice on various weaning strategies and how to ensure that calves start off on the right track.
While a wet summer with plentiful supplies of grass means cows are in good condition, the risk of respiratory diseases has increased as a result of the long spell of mild, wet weather. Disease and vaccinations will be a key part of the Marr Farm event. Ross Muir of Nithsdale Veterinary Practices will be talking about the farm’s current policies on BVD, IBR, Lepto and pneumonia. This will give an overview of the farm’s disease strategy and provide a platform to discuss participants’ future vaccination policies.
SAC Veterinary Centre Manager Colin Mason will also be on hand to speak about calf health and discuss his experiences with dwarf calf syndrome.
The event runs from 11am until 3pm and lunch is provided. It is free of charge (courtesy of the Scottish Government as part of its Public Good Veterinary and Advisory Service). Those wishing to attend should book a place by contacting Sandra MacRae, SAC Dumfries, via the details below.
