Saving Cattle from Virus Disease – Farmers Meeting at Skipton Mart Hear Scottish Experience

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N142
Published: 21 Nov 2011

Advice on controlling a disease that can cost beef farmers £45,000 over ten years will be available free, at a Lantra funded meeting planned at Skipton Auction mart on Tuesday 29th November. SAC (Scottish Agricultural College) experts on BVD will be speaking at the meeting arranged for 11.00 am.

SAC has a UK wide reputation for its research and advice on livestock disease.

BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhoea) is recognised as the most important viral disease of cattle in the UK. With the Scottish Government backing a BVD eradication policy many are suggesting this is also the time for English producers to consider the best way to tackle this scourge. There are real market opportunities for cattle of recognised disease free status on the English and Scottish markets.

The meeting, courtesy of CCM Auctions, sponsored by Norvatis and funded by Lantra, is organised by SAC’s Kendal-based consultants.

Ted Ogden & Jeremy Eaton of CCM Auctions will give a local outlook on the opportunity to market high health stock, while SAC Vet George Caldow will outline the science and life cycle of infection. Ian Pritchard, who runs SAC’s UK wide Premium Cattle Health Scheme, Is on hand to explain the benefits of a shared, structured approach to disease control. Consultants James Hadwin and Ian Cairns will give an overview of SAC Consultancy services in the North of England, as well as giving attendees the opportunity to get involved in the Yorkshire Dales Beef & sheep group. Julia Moorhouse of local practice, Kingsway Vets is in an ideal position to explain the effect BVD and disease as a whole is having in the local area.

The meeting will finish at 1.00pm, with a soup and sandwich lunch provided.

To help with the catering those thinking of attending should contact the mart office on 01756 792375.
