SAC Outlook for Farming - Global Impacts on Local Decisions – Dewars Ice Centre, Perth

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N125
Published: 17 Oct 2011

SAC on the road (opens in new window)

With the future of farming increasingly linked to global events Scottish farmers need to add an international dimension to their business planning back home. At the evening event SAC is holding at the Dewars Ice Centre in Perth on Tuesday 1st November a group of invited experts will offer farmers their own local and global perspective on the future.

The meeting in Perth is the second in the Scottish Agricultural Colleges SAC’s annual series of Outlook Roadshow events offering an analysis of market trends and forecast for both the livestock and arable sectors. Over two hours the audience will hear from an invited guest and two SAC specialists. There will be an opportunity to question the panel in wider debate before heading home to the farm.

James Withers, the recently appointed Chief Executive of food promotion body “Scotland Food and Drink”, will outline his vision for the food industry and the role primary producers can play. Until recently James Withers ran NFU Scotland so he is in an ideal position to identify the win wins for both food companies and those growing the food.

Supporting James will be two SAC consultants who watch closely what is happening on home and international markets. With market volatility being the watchwords farmers have seen cereal and livestock prices rise and fall with increasing rapidity. In addition to concerns about the value of their outputs farmers are equally worried about the cost of inputs, like fertilisers and fuel. Julian Bell follows the grain and commodity markets. Douglas Bell concentrates on livestock prices or movements and in addition the proposed CAP reform proposals.

The meeting will begin at 7.30 pm and finish at 9.30 with light refreshment before the journey home. SAC’s Outllook Roadshow series is part of SAC’s Success through Knowledge campaign. SAC acknowledges support for Knowledge Transfer and Exchange from Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council.

Anyone wanting further information should contact the SAC office in Perth (01738 636611) or lisa.macdonald@sac.co.uk (0131 535 4008). While the event is free some idea of the numbers attending would help those planning the post event refreshments.
