There is increasing recognition by funding bodies that on-farm environmental initiatives achieve better results if they are applied over a wider area. With that in mind SAC is holding a meeting and farm walk at Tomintoul to highlight how, by making joint applications, farmers may have more success in receiving funding for agri-environment schemes under the Government’s Rural Priorities programme (SRDP).

The meeting in the Richmond Hall, Tomintoul will focus on the opportunities that exist to use SRDP funding to help declining wading birds such as the Lapwing, Curlew and Oystercatcher. They are among the most familiar and best loved birds of Scottish farmland, but their numbers have dropped in Scotland by between 24% and 53% in the past 15 years for a variety of reasons, including habitat change and predation.

Speakers from SAC and RSPB Scotland will explain the kind of beneficial practical management that land managers can undertake to encourage and support bird populations. They will also hear how, through collaboration and participation in RSPB farmland wader projects, they might gain valuable extra points to support their Rural Priorities applications. After the free lunch in the Hall there will be a farm walk at nearby Milton, courtesy of Mr H G McIntosh to see practical management for wading birds, including rush cutting.

The open meeting, which is funded through the Scottish Government’s advisory activity programme, is free starts at 11.00 am. Places should be booked through the SAC offices at Elgin (01343 548787) or Thainstone (01467 625385).
