Search Begins for Cumbria’s Next Rural Leaders

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N119
Published: 11 Oct 2011

An exciting opportunity is available for the next generation of rural leaders in Cumbria. SAC (Scottish Agricultural College), based at Lane Farm, Crooklands, is launching the Cumbria Rural Leadership Programme, offering successful applicants the opportunity to sharpen their business, communication and leadership skills and see at first hand how Government works in Westminster and Brussels.

SAC is delivering the programme through the Defra-funded Rural Skills Cumbria project. It is open to applicants involved in farming, forestry and food. Across 12 days between November 2011 and March next year, activities will include facilitated workshops, inspirational speakers, individual coaching sessions, media training, the opportunity to build new contacts and networks and expert support in developing a personal action plan. The course will be run across two groups - one covering Solway, Border and Eden and one covering Cumbria Fells and Dales.

SAC has a very successful track record of delivering Rural Leadership training, having delivered a similar programme to 200 trainees north of the border for Scottish Enterprise since 2009.
SAC’s Programme Co-ordinator Emily Maclean said: “The Cumbria Rural Leadership Programme promises to be a unique experience that is enjoyable, sociable and hugely stimulating. For many participants the best part may be meeting and developing business relationships with a range of like-minded people. For others it could be the leadership workshops and learning how to relate to others. For some, the learning journeys and getting access to the people who matter in the corridors of power is what will be most important.”

More details will be available at two Rural Skills Cumbria information events, to be held on Thursday 27th October: from 1pm – 3pm at Lane Farm, Crooklands and from 7pm – 9pm at The Shepherds Rest, Rosehill Estate, Carlisle. There will also be the opportunity at these events to hear about the other rural training opportunities available under Rural Skills Cumbria.

To book your place at an information event or for further details please contact Emily Maclean on 01539 556987 or emily.maclean@sac.co.uk.
