A Family Farm Walk with a Difference – Special Event at Stewart Tower Dairy

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N108
Published: 15 Sep 2011

Stewart Tower Dairy in Stanley, Perthshire is inviting families to a special event on Saturday 1st October, where the focus will be on making a difference as well as ice cream. As the previous planned event was rained off everyone is hoping the climate will be better this time.

Appropriately Stewart Tower is one of the farms taking part in the Scottish Government’s ‘Farming for a Better Climate’ (FFBC) project. Supported by SAC (Scottish Agricultural College), farmers involved in the initiative are exploring practical ways to  reduce farming’s impact on climate change and the environment.

On Saturday, as well as the dairy cows and delicious ice cream, visitors can tour Stewart Tower see for themselves how the farm is reducing the levels of harmful greenhouse gases produced as  grows its crops or feeds and milks its cows. Some of their ideas could also be adopted, on a smaller scale, in our own homes and gardens. Neil and Lindsay Butler at Stewart Tower will be joined by SAC environmental experts who will answer questions and pass on tips.

SAC’s Climate Change Manager Rebecca Audsley, who oversees FFBC, said: “The Scottish Government has set a target to reduce Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. This will mean we will all have a part to play in achieving this.

“We are inviting people along to Stewart Tower to find out more about what Scottish farms are doing to help tackle climate change. But we will also be showing people how some simple steps they can take at home can all add up and make a positive difference to the environment.”

Farmer Neil Butler said: “We are looking forward to inviting people on to the farm to show them what we are doing. We are pleased to be involved in the FFBC project and still learning about how some of the small positive changes on a farm to farm basis could add up to cumulative benefits across Scotland.”

SAC Farm Facilitator for Stewart Tower, Sinclair Simpson said: “The event will be fun, you might learn something and it will give the opportunity for other local farmers at the event to meet the public who are their clients.”

In addition to the opportunity to tour the farm, there will be a competition on the day and a free ice cream for every visitor at the end of the walk.

The event is free but visitors are asked to book in advance with the SAC Perth Office on 01738 63 66 11 to be allocated to a tour time.
