SAC Appoints New Potato Specialist

Matthew Smallwood has been appointed as SAC’s Senior Potato Consultant and will be based at SAC’s Perth Office. Matt will work closely with Dr Stuart Wale, who continues to work for SAC on a reduced-days basis. He will co-ordinate activity with the other members of the SAC Potato Team – Ruiaridh Bain, Daan Kiezebrink, Mark Ballingall, Andy Evans and the Potato Crop Clinic.

For Matt this marks a return to SAC after eight years working for Dundee based Taypack and Cygnet PB, his present employer. Iain Riddell, who manages Specialist Services for SAC believes the appointment further strengthens SAC’s potato team.

“Matt brings a wealth of experience in the potato industry including consultancy to the seed and ware sectors in the UK and overseas, management of breeding programmes, tendering and managing R&D projects and presenting at industry events”.

Matt began specialising in potatoes during 1995. He had previously worked in the UK combinable crops sector since graduating, with honours, from Harper Adams University College. He says:

“I am delighted to return to SAC to work with the SAC Potato team in partnership with Stuart Wale. I want to continue to develop and evolve R&D, Knowledge Transfer and consultancy services to meet the current and future requirements of all sectors of the potato industry.”
