Coping with the Cost of Bedding - New Deer Farmers Meeting Addresses Key Industry Issues
SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N08
Published: 19 Jan 2011
Aberdeenshire cattle and sheep producers will head to New Deer on Wednesday 26th January for a farm open day, organised by SAC at Hilton of Culsh. With farmers facing frightening rises in the cost of straw for feeding and bedding livestock there will be a special topical discussion on the subject. SAC beef and sheep specialist, Ian Pritchard will consider the pros and cons of alternative bedding materials and there will be practical demonstrations of other non-straw sources such as peat and wood fines (recycled wooden products).
Hosting the event is the well known farming family, William and Jennifer Brown who’s farming operation includes suckler cattle, breeding sheep and cereal production. Those farmers attending will have the chance to see their quality livestock and find out more about the Brown’s farming system.
As well as the important issue of bedding other topics to be highlighted will be winter rations for cattle and sheep and seasonal health issues for livestock, including the Government programme to eradicate BVD in Scotland and pre lambing ewe management. In addition to SAC specialist there will be speakers from Meadows Veterinary Practice and the commercial companies Harbro and Norvite. Bedding demonstrations will be provided by Neil Godsman, A & E Cumming and machinery dealers A.M Philip and Sellars.
The event at Hilton of Culsh starts at 11.00am with presentations and practical demonstrations of alternative bedding sources. Lunch will be provided. The event is part funded by the Scottish Government as part of its Animal Welfare Advisory Activity. For catering purposes it is necessary to phone and book a place, please phone SAC Turriff on 01888 563333.
