SAC Ready to Work With New SNP Government: New Rural Policy Centre Briefing Accompanies Professor

SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N57
Published: 10 May 2011

SAC is looking forward to a strong working relationship with the new Scottish Government, similar to that it developed with the former SNP-led administration.

Commenting after the party’s historic election result, SAC Chief Executive and Principal Professor Bill McKelvey said: “Like the rest of the world, Scotland faces immense challenges, such as tackling climate change, producing food sustainably, protecting our environment, making the best use of our land and supporting our rural communities.

“As the Scottish Government seeks to identify long-term solutions to these issues against a challenging economic backdrop, SAC is ready to play its role. We will provide evidence-based knowledge to help the Government identify realistic and effective solutions. We will also offer our expertise to assist the Government in its discussions with Westminster and Brussels on key rural policy issues.  In addition, we aim to build upon our existing partnerships with a range of Universities and Colleges to ensure the next generation has the appropriate expertise to deliver the Government’s vision of a healthy and sustainable Scotland.”

Professor McKelvey’s comments are supported by a new SAC Rural Policy Centre Policy Briefing highlighting the key priorities for agriculture and rural issues as set out by the SNP in its Manifesto. The Briefing contains web links to relevant areas of Rural Policy Centre research which align with the issues highlighted.

Professor McKelvey added: “The new Briefing shows the range of knowledge and expertise that SAC’s Rural Policy Centre has in relation to the big issues. Over the coming weeks and months, the Centre will continue its work presenting the Scottish Government and other stakeholders with impartial evidence and analysis to help them assess current, and inform future policymaking.”
