Maximising Production, Minimising Greenhouse Gases – SAC Meeting for Perthshire Sheep Farmers
SAC News Release Ref. No: 11N148
Published: 05 Dec 2011
“Perthshire’s livestock industry can help tackle climate change and at the same time add value to the Tayside rural economy”.
That is the view of respected SAC Sheep specialist Dr John Vipond. At a meeting near Blairgowrie on Wednesday 14th December he will outline ways sheep producers can increase output, lower costs and add income.
“Efficient production means cutting out waste and making maximum use of resources”, says John Vipond. “It’s not only a good way to farm it also means more kilo’s of meat per litre of any greenhouse gas emitted. It lowers the farms carbon footprint”.
At Glenkilrie Farm, Blacklunans, just 12 miles north of Blairgowrie on the A93 Perth to Braemar road, David and Morag Houstoun run 1000 ewes in two flocks. Dr Vipond will discuss the management of the Glenkilrie flocks, and suggest ways farmers can optimise production, maximise profits and cut energy waste.
Glenkilrie is one of Scotland’s Climate Change Focus Farms. They are part of the Scottish Government’s “Farming for a Better Climate” initiative, run by SAC. Local groups of farmers and neighbours try out local solutions to a global problem, how to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets and tackle climate change. However John Vipond will stress that attention to detail and improved management can win for the planet and for the farm business.
During a busy but informative day, with lunch provided, John Vipond will consider winter feeding regimes, making the most of grass or other forages and the best breed of ewe and ram for the system. In addition there will be presentations on finishing the lambs produced and proper flock health planning.
A soup/sandwich lunch will be provided at Blackwater Hall. While the meeting is free it will help with catering if those attending can book a place by contacting SAC Perth Office via the details below.
