SAC Appoints New Board Members

SAC News Release Ref. No: 10N84
Published: 08 Oct 2010

Five new Board members are to join SAC over the next two years. Chairman Lord Jamie Lindsay announced the changes at SAC’s Annual Dinner in Edinburgh. In expressing his delight at the opportunities the new additions offered Lord Lindsay said the new entrants added a rich mix of experience and expertise.

“SAC’s role in rural Scotland is changing as rural Scotland changes. We must constantly ensure our Board has the right mix of skills and understanding to guide the business forward. I believe the new appointments do just that, enhancing our traditional strengths but also informing the way we position the business to meet new challenges and opportunities”.

Two of those appointed will take up their posts immediately. These are Stewart Houston, Chairman of the British Pig Executive and Luke Borwick, Chairman of the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association. In April next year they will be joined by Sandy Cumming, until recently Chief Executive of Highlands and Island Enterprise (HIE). Two others will join at the AGM of 2011. Professor Campbell Gemmell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Jim McLaren, currently President of NFU Scotland.

Lord Jamie Lindsay explained the aim is to give the new Board members time to settle in to their roles before long serving members step down. While the Board will be a little larger for a short period, it will return to its present business-like format.

“In Luke Borwick, Stewart Houston and Sandy Cumming, we have three individuals with outstanding records. Luke Borwick’s experience of land ownership and land use issues extends beyond Scotland to England and Europe where he has wide contacts. Yorkshireman Stewart Houston brings a wide knowledge of the English farming scene and a sector where SAC welfare research is focused. Sandy Cumming’s reputation in economic development and enterprise reaches far beyond the Highlands where he is so deeply respected”.

“When Campbell Gemmell and Jim McLaren join us“, said the Chairman, “they will bring outstanding experience in environmental science and a deep understanding of how Scottish farmers are facing the challenges ahead”.

Lord Lindsay also paid tribute to Professor Roger Croft who was retiring from the Board after eight years.

“His experience and enthusiasm has been a tremendous asset to the business”, said Jamie Lindsay “He argued from a deep commitment to science based conservation and rural communities. Roger has made an invaluable contribution to SAC’s current progress”.
