SAC List Of Technical Notes Extended

SAC has added several new Technical Notes to its extensive catalogue of short, practical field guides to key issues facing farmers and land managers.

SAC has a long history of providing such handy, easy-to-read advice, although nowadays it is more frequently published on the website rather than in printed form.

With funding from the Scottish Government under the Veterinary & Advisory Services (VAS) programme, the three latest publications deal with organic fertilisers, black-grass and barley disease control.

Those that have been published include:

TN622: Optimising the application of bulky organic fertilisers
This provides information on the ‘typical’ chemical and physical properties of the main types of bulky organic fertilisers and explains how to use the materials to best effect, while ensuring compliance with the relevant legislation.

TN626 Black-grass: Managing the risk under Scottish conditions
This technical note covers the current situation regarding the “weed” Black Grass in Scotland. It presents a picture where, through climate change, Black Grass infestation could reach similar levels to parts of England

TN627: Barley disease control
This note contains up to date information about the management of winter and spring barley diseases. There is new information on varietal resistance, integrated control management, fungicide programmes and fungicide resistance

Two additional Technical Notes will be published shortly:

TN628: Land management for butterflies
This note provides guidance on best practice land management to support and encourage butterflies and their habitats

TN629: Management of species rich grassland
This note provides guidance on good practice to protect, manage and if necessary restore naturally occurring species rich grasslands.
