How can the techniques used to develop Britain’s newest botanic garden be translated into creating an impressive array of plants and blooms in your own green space?
Professor Nicholas Wray, Curator of the new University of Bristol Botanic Garden, will be answering this question at SAC’s Auchincruive campus when he gives the 22nd annual public lecture, organised by SAC in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Nicholas, a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture, has worked in botanic gardens for 25 years and has travelled extensively, studying plants in the wild. His vast knowledge of plant life was instrumental in the planning and plant selection for the new Bristol Botanic Garden, where planting started in 2005.
The garden focuses on four themed plant collections: plant evolution; plants of Mediterranean climate regions; useful plants; and local flora and rare native plants. The plants have been carefully chosen to fulfil the teaching, research and conservation requirements of a small University Botanic Garden in the 21st Century.
The garden also provides many ideas for layout and plant use in a private garden, and Nicholas will be sharing his secrets when he visits Ayr.
The lecture takes place at 7.30pm on 18th January 2011 at the SAC Ayr Campus. To book tickets contact Peter MacDonald at Auchincruive on 01292 525313 or email peter.macdonald@sac.ac.uk. RHS members £5.00, non-members £8.00.
