Maize – A Season Past, A Season To Come – SAC Open Day At Crichton

The past and future for maize will come under the spotlight on when SAC hosts an open day at Crichton Royal Farm, Dumfries on Wednesday, 3rd February. Organised in conjunction with machinery manufacturer Samco and seed breeders Grainseed and Limagrain, the event is aimed at the practical farmer. It is sponsored by Aspatria Farmers, Limagrain and Grainseed.
Hugh McClymont, Farm Manager at SAC’s Crichton Royal Farm, will talk about his experiences of the last growing season and the performance of the 2009 crop. He will outline the results from variety demonstration plots at Crichton and explain SAC’s plans for the 2010 planting.
John Hardy from Grainseed will give a seed breeders perception of future varieties and future direction for maize growing in the north of England and Scotland. John will be joined in open discussion by John Heaphy of Limagrain who will explain the background of the company and the varieties that they are proposing for northern Britain.
Sam Shine of Samco will give a presentation on the Samco System of growing maize under biodegradable plastic. There will be explanation of how the system performs under northern conditions and delivers a mature crop of forage maize.
The event starts at 11.00 am and ends at 1.00pm with lunch provided. Those wishing to attend and requiring lunch should contact Hugh McClymont.
