Swing in sheep farming fortunes highlighted by new Farm Management Handbook

Farm Management Handbook 2010/11 (opens in new window)
The dramatic swing in the fortunes of sheep farmers over the past year is brought into focus with the publication of the 31st SAC Farm Management Handbook.
SAC Senior Sheep Consultant John Vipond said: “When comparing this year’s handbook with 2009’s, some of the biggest changes over the past 12 months are to be seen in the sheep sector, where record returns were achieved. With a breeding gimmer now worth more than a tonne of grain, will the annual reduction in UK sheep numbers that have been a regular feature now stop?
“Compared to lowland farmers, hill producers with fewer lambs to sell and higher winter feed bills are much less profitable, although a new role is increasingly being recognised for non- productive wether sheep in the control of ticks, which also affect grouse.”
The Farm Management Handbook is an essential tool for any progressive farm business, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date source of information for farmers, rural professionals, students and consultants.
In response to the evolving nature of the industry, new additions to this year’s Handbook include information on emerging issues such as bio-energy, nutrient management tools and agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
The 2010/11 Handbook provides:
- detailed gross margins for livestock, arable, forage and organic enterprises
- information on renewable energy, diversification projects and organics
- whole farm data for English and Scottish farms
- information on labour, rural aid, taxation, contracting charges, buildings, forestry and credit
- key reference data such as residual values of fertilisers and feedstuffs, conversion rates and prices
- details of relevant contacts and further sources of information
The 2010/11 edition is now available at a cost of £32.00 plus postage and packaging. To order, or for more information, call the Rural Business Unit on 0131 535 3440.
