The latest series of SAC/HGCA workshops will be held amid questions over whether Scotland’s present climatic challenge is temporary or a new trend. Last Spring the coldest winter in decades was overturning plans and programmes tested by growers over a prolonged series of mild winters. Another severe snowfall and frost has farmers wondering if this is what they can expect for the next few years. It means yet more uncertainty for anyone growing or breeding new varieties of cereals and oilseeds.
Once again SAC experts are working in partnership with the body supporting research and knowledge transfer to the combinable crops sector (HGCA). Three events are planned to help Scottish growers consider future industry trends. In workshops at Carfraemill, Dewars Conference Centre and Thainstone House Hotel, they will highlight the latest research into issues such as varieties, disease management, new challenges, precision farming and the local impacts of global markets. Much of this work receives funded from Scottish Government.
The three events will begin at 9.30 with registration and coffee. Lunch will be provided and the three workshops are timed to finish at 3.20 pm each day. SAC, in conjunction with HGCA, will issue more guidance on the contents of each gathering early in the new year.
