SAC At The 2010 Royal Highland Show
Visitors to the SAC RHS stand (opens in new window)
SAC’s stand at the 2010 Royal Highland Show, 24-27 June, offers help and a welcome, whatever the need.
For the Scottish land based industries SAC means expert, impartial yet practical advice. To many young people SAC is the start of a career in rural management, food production or science. For Government SAC means the research behind rural policy. In our traditional marquee, beside the main ring, all three SAC divisions have staff on hand.
As Scotland's land-based Higher Education Institution we have information on academic, vocational and practical education in subjects including agriculture, environmental management, leisure and animal sciences. This year, for the first time, we are hosting colleagues from Scotland’s three rural colleges - Barony, Elmwood and Oatridge. The close relationship we have now offers new entrants to the industry a ladder of qualifications stretching from certificate to PhD level.
Our researchers and consultants also work closely together on a range of important topics. Issues like livestock health and welfare, subjects closely linked to farm profitability, or the real challenge of climate change and what it means for land managers. Advice is on hand about how to reduce your farm's carbon footprint and save money through raising livestock productivity or proper nutrient management. That can be tackled using the new PLANET nutrient budgeting tool which will be demonstrated on the Highland Show stand.
The future of our rural areas will depend on thriving communities and, as you will find on the stand, SAC is deeply involved in those issues. One route is through adding value to the food chain and our Food Marketing Specialists will be highlighting the importance of preserving the heritage of local food and drink through the application of Protected Food Name (PFN) status. On Friday 25th June, at 2.00pm there will be a food showcase on the stand with a chef demonstration of products registered and applying for the scheme.
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and SAC is fully involved. Our specialist consultancy services offer advice and support to land managers and local authorities on a range of environmental initiatives. SAC research is involved in a wide range of national and international wildlife research projects. Many of these are in partnership with other organisations including some of Scotland’s other research institutes. That close working is emphasised by the presence on the SAC stand of a display by Aberdeen Macaulay Research Institute and the Scottish Crop Research Institute from Dundee. Both these bodies are soon to amalgamate and form a new single research institution.
As you will see time spent on the SAC stand at the Royal Highland won't be wasted.
