Joanne Conington (opens in new window)
French President Nicolas Sarkozy was the warm-up act for SAC Livestock Geneticist Joanne Conington at the 8th World Merino Conference in Rambouillet.
However, unlike Dr. Conington, he did not have to risk volcanic dust or disrupted airlines as the event was held at the Bergerie Nationale which is the presidential residence - 50km from Paris.
It was created as a model farm by Louis XVI and has had Merino sheep on the site since the king demanded it in 1786. It appears that, unlike French royalty, they did not get the chop during the revolution and the present flock is directly descended from those original animals. Over three days Merinoscope 2010 covered the scientific and technical aspects of sheep husbandry, with a huge display representing international and local activity. Topics covered included glove making to wools of Europe, genetics and reproduction to the way dogs have been used to control or protect sheep in different countries. A demonstration of electronic identification was a key element.
Joanne Conington joined an international cast list of speakers and was invited to present a paper on “Sheep Breeding And Conservation Grazing In the UK – An Example From N. Europe’. Her paper will be available soon.
