Auchincruive Makes The Miles Count - Auchincruive Fun Run 2010
And they're off! Auchincruive Fun Run 2010 (opens in new window)
The idea of a 5k and 10k run might not be everyone’s ideal way of spending a glorious Sunday morning but the Auchincruive Fun Run recently saw over 225 keen runners take part in raising money for the Hansel Foundation.
The Ayr Pipe Band stirred up proceedings at 12 noon followed by Dean of Campus, Nick Sparks getting runners under starter’s orders. Graeme Obree, aka the Flying Scotsman, the Scottish cyclist who broke the world hour record on a home-built bike was guest of honour who blew the starter's horn.
And off they went – the route began at the beautiful Auchincruive campus. Along the banks of the River Ayr, under the Hanging Gardens of the Oswald Hall mansion, before taking the road to Oswald Bridge. Then a swift double back and up to the Cronin - and this was just for the 5k race, 10k runners had to turn back and do it all again. In total, runners covered 1,660k - the same as 7 return journeys between the Auchincruive campus and SAC HQ in Edinburgh.
Many SAC staff and students were involved, including Joy Gladstone’s band of pupils who helped to plan the day as part of their studies. Sally Gray, along with student helpers, laid out a cunning Easter egg hunt trail for the under-12’s at the event.
Generous contributions saw the runners raise almost £4,500 for the Hansel Foundation. A foundation has been set up to help people with disabilities have a meaningful and fulfilling future by providing accommodation, support and even short breaks. Kind support and sponsorship also came from BAe Systems, Chilli Refrigeration, Neogen, Wood the Hay Way, Alpha Electrical, Highland Spring, SAC Student Recruitment, Marine Highland Hotel and Keystores.
