Save Energy Campaign

SAC's reducing its carbon footprint (opens in new window)

Committed to protection of the environment, SAC recently organised an Energy Awareness Week to promote effective management amongst staff.

Held at the Craibstone, Auchincruive and Edinburgh campuses workshops provided an opportunity to pick up some useful guidance on energy management at work and home.

SAC has been successful in reducing energy consumption levels with year-on-year targets of 5% reductions are being achieved. Overall savings of 6.44% have been achieved from 1 April 2009 to 31 December 2009 when compared to the same period iin 2008.

This year, there was a valuable addition to the campaign.  Students were a main target audience.  Information on Energy Management and Energy Awareness was made available to students and placed on Blackboard. An Energy Awareness Quiz/Competition also took place at the workshops to help raise awareness of energy efficiency measures among staff and students.

One winner said, “I thought the quiz was a great way to raise energy awareness and, since completing my entry, have had the immense pleasure of settling an ongoing debate with one of my work colleagues about whether or not to switch off the (fluorescent) lights in the staff room between cups of coffee!”

Promotional materials for the week included; eco pencils, rulers and note pads with energy efficiency messages, all made from recycled material; energy efficient light bulbs and information supplied by the Carbon Trust.
This year the winners of the quiz were:

  • Edinburgh Staff – Mike Smith
  • Edinburgh Student – Lisa Hume
  • Craibstone Staff – Patrick Hughes
  • Craibstone Student – Adam Watson
  • Auchincruive Staff – Sally Gray
  • Auchincruive Student – David Doherty
