A McCracken Start To International Year Of Biodiversity
Davy McCracken explains all at the RGBE (opens in new window)
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and SAC’s Dr. Davy McCracken got it underway with his guest appearance at the first of a series of events organised this year at the Royal Botanic Garden (Edinburgh). His five-hour session, “Biodiversity on the Farm”, on Sunday 17th January, opened the RBGE programme and proved popular with the family audience it attracted.
They had been invited to drop in to a real life science studio and “discover the amazing interactions between plants, insects and birds on farmland”. Davy gave them the chance to test their farmland bird identification and look down microscopes at the insects these birds like to eat. This proved especially popular while a laptop presentation, showing a DVD on farmland biodiversity, which SAC has been developing for school use, also had a positive response.
Approximately 230 visitors “dropped in” to the event, many rating the presentation very good indeed and said it had enhanced their visit to the garden. It’s clear that hands-on activity is the key element to any similar presentation, although organising a demonstration for a wide range of ages is a real challenge. Davy would like to thank those who helped him prepare for the day, including Ed Robertson, Lorna Cole, Billy Harrison, Duncan Robertson and Allan McBride.
