Making Sense Of SAC - Kyle Academy Makes Its Assessment
Kyle Academy pupils visit SAC's Ayr campus (opens in new window)
A food assessment workshop for senior secondary school pupils at Auchincruive by SAC’s Lesley Howie passed the test. According to one of the students, from nearby Kyle Academy, “It was the best school trip I have ever been on. I really enjoyed the visit."
Lesley, from the Life Sciences Teaching Group on SAC’s Ayr campus, has been offering “sensory workshops” to secondary schools for several years. One group travelled from as far afield as Aberdeenshire and stayed overnight in Wilson Hall. The introductory experience focuses on assessing foods according to taste, colour and texture. These are very important to the food industry as they can represent market success or failure for a new product and are a key to quality control.
The workshops are popular with teachers as well as students. They help in the delivery of the Health and Food Technology option within Higher Home Economics. The group from Kyle Academy took part in two screening tests to see how they would fare as sensory assessors with some basic taste and odour identification. They then carried out some of the sensory tests used in the food industry, looking at bottled waters, colas and ice creams.
Any teacher interested in organising a trip to Auchincruive should contact Lesley Howie.
