Ian Spence (opens in new window)
SAC in Ayr is planning a treat for those already converted to organic gardening and those just thinking about it. On Tuesday, 26th January, well-known gardening author Ian Spence returns to his old college at Auchincruive to deliver the 21st annual public lecture, organised by SAC in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society. He will focus on the organic approach.
Ian gained a Diploma in Horticulture with Distinction at Auchincruive, following initial training in private service near his home in East Kilbride. In 1990 he began working for Geoff Hamilton, who presented the BBC's Gardeners' World programme for 17 years. Soon after starting, Ian was made Head Gardener at Barnsdale, where he and his staff prepared the projects seen on the programme each week by millions.
Following Geoff’s untimely death in 1996, Ian turned to authorship. In addition to writing for the Daily Telegraph Magazine, Garden News and the RHS Journal he has published four gardening books. His first two titles, “RHS Gardening Through the Year” and “RHS Garden Plants and Flowers”, published by Dorling Kindersley are in their third editions. However it is the lessons learned from another book “Your Organic Allotment” which will form the basis of his Auchincruive lecture.
The event, to be held in Lecture Room 1 of the John Hannah Building at 7.30 pm on 26th January, will be an introduction to organic gardening and the organic approach. Ian will consider soil and soil improvement, green manures, composts and animal manures, the organic approach to controlling pests, diseases and weeds. There will also be advice on planning your garden as well as fruit, vegetables and herbs.
To book tickets, please contact Peter MacDonald. RHS members £4.00, non-members £6.00.
