Cow Health And Welfare Open Days - Fort William And Skye
SAC News Release Ref. No: 09N79
Published: 01 Dec 2009
Goal is a disease-free herd (opens in new window)
Farmers and crofters in the western Highlands who are concerned about the health and welfare of their breeding cows have two opportunities to learn from the experts. Open days have been arranged for Fort William and Skye where concerns about Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) and Johne’s will be addressed. These diseases threaten cows and the calves they suckle, affecting both the welfare of the animals and production efficiency.
One event, on Roddy MacLeod’s Moy Farm, Banavie takes place at 11.00 am on Friday, 11th December. The other, at 11.30 am on Saturday, 12th December, is in the Broadford Hotel, Skye. The sessions are part-funded by the Scottish Government as part of its Animal Welfare Advisory Activity.
SAC specialists on BVD and Johne’s will be joined by local vets. While both conditions have a complicated history, the speakers will concentrate on simple, practical steps to disease control and eradication. They will look at the cost and effect of disease outbreaks, means of disease transmission, the importance of testing and the benefits of a disease-free herd. Efficient herd production is vital and embracing disease control is a necessary step.
