Bill Mackay presents the SCPLH Certificate to Christine Struthers (opens in new window)
Young farmer and SAC student Christine Struthers was perfectly qualified to help celebrate the first year of an SAC-run training course. She was the latest to qualify for the Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH) issued to anyone who authorises the sale of alcohol to the public. She received her certificate from SAC lecturer Bill MacKay who runs the course.
Christine, from Kilncadzow, Carluke is a 4th-year student studying for a BA in Leisure Management at SAC Auchincruive. She intends to use her certificate for the organisation of Young Farmers social events. Christine also considers it vital for her future career as most leisure, and tourism facilities have a hospitality element.
Under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 anyone who authorises the sale of alcohol to the public must hold a personal licence and to obtain the licence they need the SCPLH qualification. The one-day course covers aspects of licensing law, the responsible sale of alcohol and the control of order. At the end of the course candidates must complete a multiple choice test.
Christine was SAC’s 250th successful candidate to receive her certificate. Others on the course were from golf clubs, bars, restaurants, rugby clubs, nightclubs and charity organisations. The course costs £140 and Christine was able to pay using her Independent Learning Account (ILA). It is a Government annual training grant of £200 paid to those earning £18,000 a year or less.
Anyone wishing to apply for the course can do so by applying to Bill MacKay at Auchincruive on 01292 525234 or through the websites of SAC and South Ayrshire Council.
