Composting For Smallholders And Farmers

Course Programme

The objective of this course is to provide practical guidance on how composting works and how to make and use compost on farms and holdings.

It covers the following topics:

  • Definitions of compost
  • What can be composted and where to get feedstocks
  • Composting systems
  • PAS100 and the Waste Management Licensing Regulations
  • The composting process and how to make it work effectively
  • How to use compost effectively

These sessions are a mixture of lectures, group work and practical sessions.  The aim is to provide a background to compost production and use upon which the practicalities can be discussed. Sessions are currently delivered mainly indoors in a classroom situation, but access to a farm or holding is essential in order to deliver the practical aspects of the course. This course is currently delivered by Audrey Litterick, occasionally in conjunction with an external consultant.

Comprehensive handouts are provided.
