The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority is offering land managers in the National Park area a programme of free training events during 2009 to address some of the key issues and opportunities facing land managers. Being delivered by specialist consultants from SAC, the programme starts in late March.

A one day course looking at best practice and current issues in upland management.

This course would include c.2-hour introductory indoor session that would introduce current issues and developments within the management of upland areas and thereafter would focus on a site visit(s) where best practice and current issues may be exemplified and discussed.

The proposed programme could  include topics on:

• Moorland vegetation types
• Important moorland habitats & associated species i.e. black grouse
• Changes in the uplands – livestock numbers, labour, etc.
• Livestock grazing impacts -sheep, cattle & deer
• Options for moorland management  - away wintering, stock reduction, off-wintering
• Predator impacts
• Bracken management
• Heather & muirburn
• SRDP and LMO options for upland management

This course is for farmers and managers of upland areas.  It will give an overview of current moorland issues, provide information on important species and habitats in the National Park, discuss local issues and suggest possible solutions including farmer collaboration and funding.
