Introduction To Small-Scale Horticulture For Crofters And Small Farmers
Course Programme
The course objective is to provide practical guidance on how to grow horticultural crops on smallholdings and farms and covers the following topics:
- Introduction
- Crop choice
- Site and soil assessment
- Plant propagation
- Crop nutrition – fertilisers and nutrient budgeting
- Crop rotation, crop timing and crop spacing
- Crop protection
- Irrigation and cultivations
- Protected cropping and extending the season
- Development of markets
These sessions are a mixture of lectures, group work and practical sessions. The aim is to provide a background to horticultural crop production and to discuss the challenges they involve in a practical environment. Sessions are currently delivered mainly indoors in a classroom situation, but access to a farm or holding is essential in order to deliver the practical aspects of the course. This course is currently delivered by Audrey Litterick, in conjunction with an SAC soils and nutrient management specialist from another division.
