The Business Of Farming: A Course For Bankers

Course Programme

The course is in two parts. The first part is to provide the economic and technical background of farming from a whole agricultural industry perspective to the individual farm business.

The second part of the course discusses some of the techniques of farm business management which the banker and consultant can employ to help the farmer make better use of the available resources.

This course is aimed at bank managers and Members of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland.

The one week course is a mix of formal papers and visits to three commercial farms which illustrate the main farm types in Britain. Ample time is provided for discussion throughout the course to draw on the course participants' own experiences. For the second part of the course another commercial farm is visited in order to provide a series of case studies relating to problems associated with the business, in which course members participate fully.

Qualifications Obtained

By the end of the course the participants will:


  • understand the importance of agriculture within the economy using key trends and statistics
  • gain a knowledge of the main farming systems
  • understand the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy and learn about the key features of the Reformed CAP
  • be able to assess the viability of farms using technical performance indicators and analysis of the Profit & Loss Account using comparative analysis
  • be able to analyse farm Balance Sheets and use a “Farmers Statement of Affairs”
  • understand the gross margin system and be able to understand its use for partial budgeting
  • be able to recognise when a whole farm budget is required and assess lending propositions
