Course Programme
The course objective is to enhance the financial control and business management skills of farmers and through this, improve the sustainability and competitiveness of their businesses.
The course structure comprises modules covering:
- understanding and analysing farm accounts
- budgeting and cashflow preparation
- financial control and investment appraisal
- business planning
The modules are organised at weekly intervals to give continuity and sufficient time for homework. All the modules involve two trainers in the delivery to 8-12 trainees. Two trainers are necessary due to the interactive nature of the course and the extensive use of practical exercises.

Qualifications Obtained
By the end of the course the participants will:
- understand the basics of farm accounts and their interpretation
- be able to analyse a set of accounts to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a business
- recognise common business problems and identify potential solutions
- prepare a whole farm gross margin budget and cashflow
- undertake simple investment appraisals including partial budgeting
- recognise their personal and business objectives and have the skills and confidence to develop these into a strategic business plan
