Efficient Fertiliser Use

Course Programme

The course objective is to maximise yields while maintaining soil fertility.  This will be achieved by replacing the nutrients that a crop actually removes, once nutrient levels in the soil are within the optimum range.

The course includes:

  • details of principles of balance sheet manuring for P and K
  • calculation of off-takes by different crops
  • fertiliser allowances for manures and slurry
  • practical examples

Approximate cost: £80 (with 75% LMO grant = £20)

Qualifications Obtained

By the end of the course the participants will:


  • understand the principles of balance sheet manuring
  • know the optimum soil status to aim to achieve
  • be able to calculate how much P and K crops are removing
  • be able to calculate how much P and K manures and slurries are supplying
  • understand how plants make use of P and K from fertilisers and in the soil
