Making Yourself at Home
Information for students from Ireland
The lifestyle issues we consider are:
Making Friends and Having Good Times
It’s always important to have plenty to do in your spare time. This stops you feeling homesick and gives you opportunities to meet people and make friends. The kinds of activities available from all three of our campuses include:
- joining College clubs and activities or groups in nearby communities,
- joining a local church community
- going out to theatres or cinemas, bars or restaurants
- the College’s own refectory or student bar
- enjoying live music and concerts
- taking walks or joining organised tours
- visiting sites of historic or cultural interest
- taking part in sport
- or just spectating
...you name it, chances are we’ll be able to help you find what you are lookiing for.
How We Support You
Student Services are available on each campus to provide you with advice on a wide range of issues that could affect the quality of your student experience. The main topics students ask about include:
- shopping
- cost of living
- budgeting
- banking
- working
- health care
- insurance
- accommodation
- religion
- and keeping in touch with home.
Scottish students too will share some of these concerns and plenty of material exists to help you all manage.
However, everyone is different, so the support and guidance provided can be matched specifically to your needs as they occur.
Lots in Common
Most students won't find it too hard to settle in Scotland. One key factor for students from Ireland is the language, the shared heritage of the Celts and the same channels on T.V. so you may be able to still follow your favourite soaps.
Another advantage of choosing Scotland is that the college system here is very similar to the Irish system, with a similar mix of
- lectures
- seminars
- tutorials
- practical classes
- field trips
- independent study
- e-learning
- exams
- continuous assessment.
Our students come from diverse national backgrounds, so SAC is used to helping people who are new to the campus or the country to ‘make themselves at home’!
