SAC Outreach to Local Communities

Author: Jill Thomson and Peter Macdonald

Catstrand is a unique arts and community centre in Dumfries and Galloway providing a diverse programme of activities for local people. Recently they invited SAC to deliver some basic horticulture courses to some keen amateur gardeners in New Galloway.

This project started on 26th February with Peter MacDonald (lecturer in Horticulture) giving a one-day course entitled "An Introduction to Growing Vegetables". The day concentrated on the principles of producing strong young plants and included practice in seed sowing and pricking off as well as discussing the importance of good soils and irrigation. The day finished with a session of plant nutrition and also on the spacing of a range of crops.

Peter says, "Getting out into community settings and meeting people with an interest in Horticulture gives me a chance to take learning to a wider audience. Some people who attend these events realise that with ongoing learning and more formal education to gain a qualification, turning a hobby into a career is a real possibility."
